Mapping Notation
Mapping Notation is another way of figuring out the points of your parabola to plot onto the graph. What you need for this is:
  • Your equation in Vertex Form
  • The formula (x+h, ay+k)
  • The table that shows you the points of y=x^2
So the Vertex Form, y=a(x-h)^2+k as you already know, is going to be used in Mapping Notation. What you need to do is sub the values of your equation into the formula
(x+h, ay+k). Consider that you had the equation set up like this, [y=2(x-4)^2+5], your formula would look like this, (x+4, 2y+5). This is because [a=2, h=-4, k=5]. Now all you have to do is take the x-values from the table that shows you the points of y=x^2 and then sub them into the mapping notation formula. For example i would take -4 and sub it into the x part of the formula [-4+4] and the 16 (which i got because 4^2 is 16) into the y part of the formula which makes 2*16+5. This gives you your x and y coordinates. Also while you're subbing in the points, you are making another table on the side which shows what x and y values you got.
